In "Queen Ija's Promise", Kate's little brother, Matt, goes missing at a fun fair and five years later she is still coming to terms with it; failing her classes and fighting with her mum. Then an odd, elderly neighbout tells Kate that the world of Abadazad, a fictional fantasy realm that featured in Matt's favourite stories, is real, and that Matt's been abducted into this wonderland.
