As military technology rapidly evolved, these armies suffered catastrophic losses, requiring Ulysses Grant and Robert E. Lee to inspire their troops to new heights of valor. Among the events covered here are J.E.B. Stuart's bold 1862 raid on Northern territory, and three months later, the Battle of Antietam, still the bloodiest day in the nation's history.
