Conrad 1: Nostromo

Written in 1904, Nostromo by Joseph Conrad is considered to be one of his finest works. Set in the entirely fictional world of a South American country and Its port city of Sulaco, it chronicles the wars, revolutions and politics of the place. We learn in vivid detail about the lives and relationships of Nostromo, a charismatic Italian and a man of many means who is considered a useful tool by the upper class. This story is about his disillusionment after he
doesn't get the recognition he felt he deserved leading the young journalist Decoud on an adventure saving the silver ingots from falling into enemy hands. His sense of betrayal leads to his obsession with the silver, and extreme paranoia, which finally ends in his death on a
dark night as he tries to access his treasure.
