Agnes “Nes” Murphy-Pujols thinks she knows what to expect when she’s transplanted from Brooklyn to a small Southern town mid—senior year. Her plan is simple: keep her head down, graduate and get out. Of course, nothing ever goes as planned. Not from day one, when she makes enemies of the school’s reigning belle and the principal, and the school’s golden boy, Doyle Rahn, starts going out of his way to make her feel welcome.

The color of her skin wasn’t something Nes thought about constantly back home. But as day one turns into months, and her friendship with Doyle sizzles into something more, Nes soon discovers that the town she’s learning to like has a disturbing undercurrent of racism—even at her school, where they hold two proms. One black, one white.

As Nes and Doyle band together with a ragtag team of classmates to plan an alternate prom—a prom open to everyone—it becomes clear that there are people in town willing to do anything to stop them from tearing down tradition. But some traditions aren’t meant to last. And sometimes, taking a stand is the only way to set things right.
